The Easyread Approach

Does Your Child Memorise And Guess Words?
As you look through this site you will find one thing coming up again and again. The problem we see in 80% of the children needing help is that they are memorising words visually and guessing the ones they don't know.
That seems to work quite well in the early stages, when they are 4 and 5. But once the text starts to get more complicated, it becomes harder and harder.
That leads to a lot of frustration as they have tried their best and find themselves on a reading plateau, falling steadily behind their peers. You will normally see a lot of negative emotions and resistance towards reading by this stage.

Time Is Important
The brain builds habits and there is no question that it is harder to rectify the problems of an 11-year-old than a 7-year-old. So the quicker we can get started the better.
People often think "it will be easier to do Easyread when..." and fill in something for the blank. I know that emotion... but actually this is probably the most important thing in your child's life. So something has to be pretty crucial to take precedence over it.

Spelling
We are often asked whether Easyread helps with spelling, along the lines of "my child can read OK, but her spelling is terrible". What we usually find is that the child is a strong visual reader, as described here. There is usually a lot of sight memorisation and guessing being used.
Since they are not decoding the words they are not becoming familiar with the internal structure of each word. Once we get them to start reading by decoding each word, their spelling starts to improve as well. This is because their skill at decoding leads directly to an improved ability to encode.
Without making that change, they will never get significantly better at spelling.
We all know adults who seem to be able to read and write, but have terrible spelling. The above is usually the cause. Of course there are other possible reasons for spelling difficulty, but 9 times out of 10 we find this to be the cause.
