Spelling
Endless spelling practice often fails to get any real progress. It can be like pushing water up a hill. The words memorised this week are gone by next week.

The way to make spelling easier is through changing how someone reads. Parents often say "but my child reads really well". Yes, but the issue is how the child is reading. If your child is recognising whole words to read, spelling will always be very hard (except possibly for spelling tests).

You also have the option of doing nothing, but you need to know that 20% of English-speaking children are not proficient in reading by the age of eleven. Most of them are very intelligent and have received a good education. The truth is that English can be a tricky language to learn to read and write.

The Results We Aim For

There are lots of systems that chase instant results in days or a few weeks. They also often just try to help a child improve enough at reading and spelling to "get by".

We view that as defeatist and short-term thinking. Quick results usually don't stick. Worse still, it is like giving someone a crutch, rather than resetting their broken leg.

We want a child to develop a joy in reading and a deep confidence with their spelling.

There is inevitably a range of results, but we are always aiming for the top half of the class and that is usually possible. Some children do find reading very hard, but we still expect to get them into the normal range for their age.

At the beginning of the year we had approached the school about getting some assistance because Amy was complaining that ‘reading hurt her brain’and she was struggling to read and spell common words. At her old school she had never reached her age level for reading. Yesterday the teacher told me that using the INCAS testing Amy’s reading age is 9 yrs 9 months (her actual age is 9 yrs and 3 month) and her decoding age is 13 years and 9 months!
So after 4 months using Easyread she has gone from someone who found reading painful to someone who is confident and happy with her reading. This is going to have a positive impact in so many ways.

I like Easyread so much and I think Easyead is amazing because it is fun and it really helped me learn to read better. I think it is creative, because it has cool stories and I really like the games and mostly the prizes. When Easyread is over, I am really going to miss it alot. And that is all I have to say.

Before the course, school assessed Francis to have a reading age of a few months below his age. When Francis was at Easyread lesson 210, his reading age was reassessed at school and found to be 15 months ahead of his age. We are very pleased with this results. What To Expect

We don't chase quick results. If that is what you want, you need to look elsewhere. Our aim is to give your child the right foundation to be reading and writing confidently over the next 70 years.

Occasionally it is all very easy and takes just 10-15 weeks to get a great result with the child shooting to the top of the class. More often it is a 6-9 month process. Sometimes it is a lot more complicated and we are working with a child for 12-18 months to get them to a passable level of competency, particularly if they have underlying memory difficulties. We view all three types of outcome as equally valuable.

We aim to take someone from atrocious spelling to pretty good (~90% correct) in around 150-200 lessons. We are not about spelling bees. If your child already gets most words right, we are not what you need.
